Deacon Herman Leon Powell I, entered eternal rest on Monday, October 2, 2023, at Elizabeth City Health & Rehabilitation, Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Deacon Powell was the “baby boy” of nine children born in Currituck, North Carolina to the late Josephus Powell and the late Vera Mitchell Powell and the husband of the late Ardella Evelyn Jarvis Powell. In addition to his parents and wife he was also predeceased by one daughter, Evelyn Powell; three brothers, Elder Little Joe Powell, Sr. (Elizabeth), Elder George Powell (Teresa), and Counsellor Johnnie Powell (Margret); five sisters, Clara Happer (Rev. William Henry), Ella Towe (Elder Dennis), Beulah Gordon (Waverly), Bettie Sawyer (Rev. Charles), Sarah Dunston (Rev. James) and Geraldine Powell, paternal in-law, William Jarvis, Sr., maternal in-law, Martha Case and in-laws Norma and John Williams.
Celebration of Life Service will be Tuesday, October 10, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at The Mount Chesapeake (Cathedral), Chesapeake Virginia with Bishop Kim W. Brown as Eulogist. Interment will be in the Christian Home Baptist Church Cemetery, Moyock, North Carolina. A viewing/visitation will be Monday, October 9, 2023, from 5 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will be receiving friends at 211 Planters Run, Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
Deacon Powell leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Dr. Benita Powell and Kristie Powell (Hasan) both of Elizabeth City, North Carolina; one son, Herman L. Powell, II, Elizabeth City, North Carolina; four grandchildren; Brianca Fountain, Brittani Fountain, Shelea Fountain and Desmond Fountain all of Saint Paul, Minnesota; six great-grandchildren, Taylor, Jace, Kayden, Charlotte, King and Dream Ardella; sister and brothers-in-law, Patricia White (Clinton-deceased), Lenora Mackey (Claude), Sgt. William Jarvis (Constance), and Rev. Dr. Lenard Jarvis (Gloria); godson, Darryl Gregory, (Jerri), god daughter, Deborah Ferebee (Andrew); and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends to remember his love and character.
